Design Process
Secondary Research
I conducted market research to understand current trends of fitness/workout App, and got below insights.
The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in nationwide lockdowns and social distancing norms. This has led to a transition to virtual fitness from traditional studios and gyms.
This increased usage rate of fitness apps due to a growing trend of online fitness training is driving the market globally. The growing awareness regarding health and wellness is also driving the market.
Fitness apps utilize artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other technologies to provide personalized fitness programs to their customers. They also offer equipment workout routines, personalized diet charts, monitor diet, track footsteps, and also provide personalized health coaches. Such advantages are increasing the growth potential of the market.
Primary Research - Survey
I prepare a series of questions related to customer's pain points, online experience and expectation and how’s their response to the new feature
User journey map
I created the user journey map to better understanding and addressing customer needs and pain points, to improve user experience design and optimization
I created a list of possibilities that the this new feature may have based on the information I gathered
Customized schedule and workout content based on each person’s physical condition and workout goal
Multi-week program helps people to keep track their workout everyday
Diet /nutrition/ workout form and safety guides should be part of the workout plan
Flexibility to adjust the plan or goal
Flexibility to adjust the difficulty/ instructor/music...of the class.( Main classes and several alternatives)
Workout everyday can be hard, taking the chance to rest and doing some meditation also help reach the goal
Track the workout and provide feedback of the progress
How can I start to improve the experience
When you first use Peloton App, it will ask you a bunch of questions. Based on your response, it will recommend classes for you. But it’s more like a filter function, sorting out the stuff you don’t like. It doesn't really guide you to reach a goal. So I re-design the user flow , including more information about your current physical condition. then based on your response, the App can provide you with a personal workout plan to help you reach the goal.
Set your goal
Provide your physical condition and other preference through a series of questions to set your goal.
Customize personal plan
Based on your goal and responses, the APP will create a multi-week personalized workout plan with fitness and healthy articles.
Track your goal
Once your daily task has been finished, the date will be marked with a red circle; Once your weekly tasks have been finished, the week will be marked with a red star. You can also find your finished workouts under your personal dashboard.
Change your goal
You can easily modify your goal and other preference on your workout plan page, and you will get an updated workout plan the next day.
Reflection and Next Steps
Designing an add-on feature to an existing product is a great opportunity to enhance a product’s shortcomings. The biggest challenge is incorporating any new feature so that it is used but simultaneously not overbearing or imposing the existing design/interface. To balance these challenges, I made my feature optional and will run usability tests to get feedback. The primary way this was overcome is that users do not need to set a goal to start a Peloton Journey, but it is available should users hit a motivational wall or want to break out of a tired routine.
